Giveaway gift bag for fundraisers

Community Response to The Fundraisers During Covid

By Events

This past year we’ve taken on several fundraisers in our establishment to help those in need. Some of the first were donating food to senior homes and front line health workers. It was incredible to see the smiles on their faces during such a difficult time.

With increasing trouble around the world, we decided to take on a couple more this year.

Lebanon Fundraiser

This past summer, after the devastating explosion that rocked Beirut, Lebanon, we launched a fundraiser. Our intent was to raise funds for the people affected by the blast to help.

The blast in Lebanon caused many deaths and injuries, on top of the havoc it created in a country that has seen so much unrest in the last while. Lebanon was already rocked by political unrest, inflation and increased poverty and on the brink of starvation due to Covid. To help those in need, we donated 50% of one week’s sales in August to the Lebanese Red Cross. We urged people to book a table or order takeout or delivery. If they could not make it, we asked that they consider donating to the Lebanese Red Cross directly at the link.

The community response on and off line was incredible. We collected $5000 for the people of Lebanon. To show our appreciation and thank the community for their overwhelming response and generosity, we’ve created this video.

UN Solidarity With The Palestinian People Fundraiser

This month, we’ve launched another giveaway in celebration of the United Nations (UN) Solidarity with the Palestinian People Day which is observed on November 29th. This giveaway is meant to raise funds for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). The Agency provides assistance and protection for 5.6+ million Palestinian refugees and the Near East. For several decades, Palestinians were the largest refugee population in the world. Only in recent years did Syrian refugee numbers surpass those of Palestinians due to the civil war in Syria.

The UNRWA has recently undergone major funding shortages. Recently, they deferred employee salary due to lack of funds and that means less help is going to those most in need and gravely affected by Covid, poverty and displacement. Some of the refugees the UNRWA cares for have been found looking for food to feed their families in garbage bins.⠀

In honour of the occasion, 10% of our month long sales will go to the UNRWA. We will announce the winner on the same day of the event.

To increase our donation amount, we’ve decided to launch a giveaway for a chance to win one of our famous gift bags. Inside the gift bag:Giveaway gift bag for fundraisers

Valentine’s Day Special Dinner

By Events 2 Comments

Valentine’s day dates back to Roman times. For many years, the Western world celebrated Valentine’s Day while other watched. Red roses, heart shaped balloons and stuffed animals are now also for sale everywhere in the world. The whole world smiles on couples every February 14th.

Valentine’s Day Evolution

It wasn’t always like this. Egyptian florists used to be forbidden to sell red roses on Valentine’s Day. Saudi Arabian’s weren’t able to celebrate it openly until 2017.

In recent times, the Arab world opted into the love holiday. Couples go out for an intimate dinner, restaurants often offer a special menu for the day. Chocolate will be there, but Persians for example prefer what they call Love Cake. The legend goes that a Persian girl fell in love with a prince and served him this cake garnished with pistachios and rose petals.

Reservation at Yafa Café For V Day

Here at Yafa Café we always believed in the power of love to change the world. Our food always tastes so good because we make it with love. We invite you to make a reservation for two at Yafa Café on Valentine’s Day.

Valentine's Day coffee beans heart

You will find our delicious Arabic food is perfect for sharing with your significant other. You and your sweetheart can enjoy a beautiful meal together while listening to romantic Arab love songs. They sound sweeter played on the oud, one of the oldest stringed instruments.

Share some mouthfuls from our delicious dishes and decadent desserts, laugh and talk. When conversation lulls, gaze into each other’s eyes as the music flows through you.

Galentine’s Day

If you find yourself dreading Valentine’s Day as it draws near, don’t worry. February 13, the day before Valentine’s Day has become known as Galentine’s Day. This is a day for women everywhere to celebrate their female friendships. Whether you are single by choice or by circumstance, this day is for you (and your friends).

Believe it or not, a fictional character on a TV series in 2010 invented Galentine’s Day. It’s often marked by gathering up all your female friends and going out to eat together. That is what they did in the show. Single or not, it’s a day to forget about Valentine’s Day and instead laugh, share, catch up over great food. Two strong women co-own our café and we opened it in tribute to our mothers and grandmothers cooking. The fresh and healthy Arabic food is based on many of the recipes they passed down. Make a reservation for you and your besties (BFFs) at Yafa Cafe on February 13th. You can enjoy and share our delicious food. We even promise to have decadent chocolate desserts on the menu for you.

Giveaways

The Moroccan style jute bags were repurposed from the coffee sacks used for coffee beans. They were designed and sewn by a Syrian refugee. It is important to us to recycle as much as possible as it’s a way for us to be more environmentally friendly. Each bag is unique, sturdy and practical.

The handmade totes were stuffed with Middle Eastern groceries and a $100 Yafa Café gift card tucked in the top. We filled them with goodies and groceries from Blady Middle Eastern Foods.  The specialty grocery store is just a few blocks away from us located at 1325 Portage Avenue. They stock a variety of groceries from Palestine, Tunisia, Turkey, Syria and other Middle Eastern countries. If you haven’t been, it’s worth a visit.

November dine-in giveaway winnerGoodies

Zaatar is one of the main herbs we use at Yafa Café so we included some of it in the giveaway bags. It is a mix of herbs and spices typically containing thyme, oregano, sumac, sesame seeds, salt and other ingredients.  We added some sage which flavours so many of our Arabic teas. Sage from the Middle East is different from sage picked elsewhere. When used in teas, it has many medicinal properties. Fig jam, dates, Turkish delight with pistachios and halvah made from tahini paste rounded out the groceries. We also added pretty Arabian scarves and the $100 Yafa Café gift card to each bag.

Instagram and dine-in giveaways

Foodies

To initiate the giveaways, we invited some Winnipeg foodies for a tasting. One set of giveaways was open to dine-in customers. Upon purchase, they were entered into a physical draw. We drew names weekly and announced winners in the café. The second and third giveaways were promoted on Instagram by Wai Chen @waieatthat and her team. She is a member of the Manitoba Food Bloggers group. Wai and her foodie bloggers came in one afternoon to try Yafa Café ‘s food. They were quite impressed and raved about how delicious it was.

They were existing customers of Yafa Café but hosting a foodie event gave them the opportunity to experience new dishes.

Future Giveaways

The lucky winner will be able to treat their friends to a delicious dinner at Yafa Café with the $100 gift card and enjoy the goodies inside the bag as well as the bag itself! Of course, maybe whoever wins would rather treat themselves. We understand our food is irresistible. The gift card would stretch to a number of leisurely visits to savour any of our renowned coffee drinks paired with delectable pieces of freshly made baklava or basbousa. Our chai karak tea is pretty good too and our London Fog has been touted the best in the city!

The good news is that we are going to be holding other giveaways in the months to come. Be sure to follow us on Instagram and keep an eye out for future giveaways.

Christmas Holiday in Winnipeg

Despite the cold weather, tourists are excitedly experiencing great Manitoba winter activities and enjoying once a year Christmas treats. Ice skating on the rink at The Forks and on the overland trail is making them ooh and ahh over the spectacular Christmas light shows at Assiniboine Park.
They likely also appreciated the pop-up Christmas markets with beautiful handmade objects for sale more than they did as they prefer more active activities. We will be taking them ice skating again soon.
During one of our family excursions, we pulled out our camera and took some great photos of festive Winnipeg. Here is one of our daughter’s friend at the CMHR.

Mother's Day

Celebrating Mother’s Day at Yafa Café

By Events No Comments

Each May we gather to celebrate the first woman in our lives — Mama! This Mother’s Day, we collected thoughts from our staff.

Mother’s Day Thoughts

In honour of Mother’s Day, we asked Yafa Café’s staff to share a few words about why they are grateful for their mothers. Here are some answers:

Mother's Day

Cooking Genes

“… I get my cooking genes from her! She was always an amazing chef and educator. I loved how she cooked when I was a kid — my favourite is the salad Mom made every day. The key to this delicious salad is the freshness of the ingredients. It is rare to have a Palestinian meal without including a salad. The vibrant colours act as an electrifying addition to the main dish. My father always added hot peppery bites, which gave it an amazingly delicious taste. This salad is authentic, flavourful & super healthy.”

Always There For Me

Mom made me who I am in every sense of the word. She has always been there for me and understood me, encouraged and pushed me to be my best. She makes my heart smile. My mother, who’s from Iraq, is my role model. Caring, compassionate, supportive, patient, flexible, dependable, honest, hardworking, organized, creative, handy, appreciative, is who my mother was. This woman taught me so many life lessons and core values, which make me who I am today.”

Biggest Support

“She taught me I could do anything and supported all the crazy things I did in life as long as they were connected to a purpose.” Mom encouraged me to pursue the highest education. Mama knows me better than anyone else. Everything I learned from her I want to infuse in my children, the open heartedness, the acceptance, the self-worth, honesty and intelligence. Thank you, Mama.”

I Wish I Knew Better

“…As I grew older, I wish I had known better; I stopped making mistakes when my mother became my very best friend. She knows me inside and out and has taught me to be everything that I am proud of!”

The Bond Was Broken

Mother-daughter bond was broken early, as mom left me to take care of my five siblings, no custody battle. Seeing them so sad broke my heart, even though I was only 18. I wanted to make them happy again. Doing all the cleaning and cooking was my way of trying to cheer them up. Now I feel sad for the young girl who was me. I should have been studying, not worrying about raising my brothers and sisters.

There were good times before she left. She always made a fuss on our birthdays. Christmas was always wonderful. She would make a special game to find exactly the things we asked for. Almost four years later, I still bear the scars of my mother’s decision to leave her family for another man. The abandonment and rejection that shaped my life, but I love my mom and wish to send her a big HUG.”

With Love From Yafa

Yafa’s Cafe team is sending an “I Love You” to all the mother figures in your lives.

By Events, Update No Comments

Winnipeg, Manitoba, a new café has opened its doors in Winnipeg.

Yafa Café Arabic Street Food Ltd., owned and operated by Rana and Sarah Abdulla, is set to be home to a stunning new café, loved and renowned for its architecture, its art, its great service, and, for its superb food and coffee.

Yafa Café, offers state of the art modern facilities with its Arabic ambiance, for a vibrant experience. Customers enjoy greater space, more comfortable seating, a large outdoor decking space for the summer months.  It is fast becoming the go-to meeting place for coffee-loving Winnipeggers.

Rana Abdulla, the owner said “when people experience the Café, they aren’t just enjoying great food and drink in a fantastic Arabic style setting, but they also witness how we are boosting our culturally diverse city.  We have items and styles of cooking people have never seen that will draw all kinds of customers and businesses with prices that are competitive and affordable.  This is an addition to Winnipeg, not new to Winnipeg, it’s great news for everyone”.

The café is located few blocks from Polo Park on the corner of Berry and Portage and minutes away from the Assiniboine Zoo. “You can’t get a better location than that,” said Abdulla, who believes that the café’s setting, décor and healthy exotic menu will bring curious and discerning people into the eatery, and that the quality of the food and ambience will bring them back again and again, with their friends.

The owners describe it as a café and community workspace that aims to foster a vibrant culture of appreciating culture and diversity.

The entrance reflects a thoughtful reuse of an old building dating back to 1911 and the interior introduces a creative design for maximum speed and efficiency of service while shining a bright light on Arabic street food, reimagined and poised to assert itself as the best food.
